Adding Custom HTML Box To My Facebook Page

UPDATED –> Thanks to facebook’s fast moving evolution, this article has become some what outdated. Please read the new Tutorial on how to add HTML to facebook that talks about creating a custom page on facebook.

In the previous post I wrote about adding a custom HTML box to my Facebook Profile, today I will talk about adding  a custom HTML box to my Facebook Pages. I spent hours trying to figure out how this is done and realized after a while that Facebook is still having lots of navigation and usability issues. The navigation between the main Profile area and other elements of Facebook are not linked very well, at least no very intuitive and easy to get lost. Once you get something to work it is hard to find out how you did it and to replicate it.

After hours of surfing the help pages and forums I finally found some patterns and figured out how certain things are done.

Adding a custom HTML box to your Facebook Pages requires a different procedure and a separate Application from what was used in the previous post so to add an HTML box to Facebook Pages (not Facebook Profile) follow these instructions.

After spending some serious time on Facebook trying to do a few things on my profile I realized that Facebook’s navigation between different Facebook applications and elements are less then perfect. It took me hours but I finally found some patterns and figured out how certain things are done.

One of the things I needed to do was to add a custom HTML box to my Facebook Profile, but then I also wanted to do the same to my Facebook Pages that I’ve created. This document is the complete instructions on doing exactly that. So let’s dive in. We’ll first start with Facebook Profile page. Transfering A Site To New Domain And Keeping The PageRank

It’s been 3 months since I transferred this blog to a new, better domain. The previous domain was wbDesignIdeas.com which was a .com but was not a quality domain. I’ve tried for about a year to acquire the WebDesignIdeas.com domain but the current owner is not willing to sell even though he’s not using it at this time. I knew that a domain change is in it’s future so better switch it now while the blog is still in the beginning growing stage. The new domain is WebDesignIdeas.org, which is nice, it is exactly what I wanted to have but a .ORG. I think it is fine though.

So in January of 2009, the old domain had just gotten a PageRank of 4 when I switched out the domain and did a 301 redirect on it to point to the new domain. Obviously the PR was gone. It was really sad to see and I was a bit scarred that it wouldn’t return.

On April 1st the PR had returned to 4!

It’s been 3 months and it was a real relief to finally see it return. So now, we go on, continue to grow and improve it.

Here is what I did to move to the new domain.

  1. Point the new domain to the blog directory.
  2. Created a new directory on the server named old-site.
  3. Created a .htaccess file within the old-site directory.
Here is the contents of the .htaccess file:Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.webdesignideas.org/$1 [R=301,L]
  4. Tested to make sure that when trying to open the old-site directory, it redirects to the new domain.
  5. Pointed the old domain to the old-site directory.
  6. Tested to make sure it forwards.
  7. Updated the entries in the sitemap.xml file to reflect the new domain.
  8. Deleted the sitemap from Google Webmaster Central and uploaded the new one.
  9. Waited 3 months.

Hope this helps some one.
