Well for most of the practical uses, according to Apple, it just might. A new section on the Apple’s website dedicated specifically to HTML5 and the proof that “we” don’t really need Flash anymore. When I read about this first in a WebDesigner magazine, and even heard about this earlier, I thought it was just talk and propaganda Jobs was throwing around because he did not like Flash for some personal reasons, but after checking out what they’ve built and seen with my own eyes what can be done without Flash I could not believe my eyes.
Make sure to check this out and see the possibilities with HTML5!
(you will need to view this in Safari)
HTML5 is still in development and none of the browsers really support it just yet. Apple’s Safari browser has the most support, from my own tests. I used the HTML5test.com tool to test my browsers and here is what I see, out of the possible 300 points:
Safari – 208 points
Chrome – 197 points
FireFox – 139 points
Opera – 67 points
Internet Explorer – 27 points
So in my experience, Safari is an OK browser, which have been getting better and better but I am not quiet ready to switch over, FireFox is still the browser for me. Bottom line is until these browsers get their HTML5 support up closer to 300, Flash should be fine, but I do see the end of having to embed flash objects in the near future.

Well, that sucks that my Firefox can’t do HTML 5 as good as Safari, hopefully they’ll update that little problem soon…
Awesome article by the way, it’s good to know that Flash isn’t required anymore for 3D Designs on the websites :)
If you’ve ever used Flash Catalyst, you’ll know that it’s an amazing tool, somehow I don’t think I’ll stop using flash until they make a program with the functionality of Catalyst, but in HTML5.
I think Flash is overrated. As a designer, our firm has quoted about a total of 2 flash projects in the last 3 years.
Hey, we gotta keep Flash off mobile devices. Could you imagine playing free music through browser sites like grooveshark? Or would you rather pay Apple 49 cents a song and preserve their revenue stream? Does it matter that Flash offers more than HTML5 than video and a few bells and whistles that Flash and Silverlight and other RIAs handle easly? Nope, it threatens Apple’s download service by offering items to the consumer that Apple can’t control and charge you for. That’s the only reason Adobe (who carried Apple through the early Mac era) is getting thrown under the bus by Apple with its smear campaign (sadly our modern Steve Jobs is doing stuff that 90s underdog hero Steve Jobs villainized MicroSoft for). Apple makes statements like battery life being an issue while approving hand warmer apps that drop the battery life on their iPhone significantly when compared to a RIA running on the phone (Really, they could just put RAM in their phone like other devices rather than strictly use PoP). Having no Flash on the browser means the browser is more or less broken when compared to other browsers on other devices, yet Apple has consumers celebrating the setback. Don’t fall for it, Apple consumers. Make Apple cave and fix your browsers to match current generation phnoes.
Thank you for your comment. That is a very interesting point of view and I agree, without the Flash player on there now, with nothing there to replace it.. it’s as good as broken and who wants to use that?
