Dreamweaver CS4 Can’t Copy & Paste Code

Adobe_Dreamweaver_CS3_retail_box

Do you ever feel like big companies sometimes feel like they just don’t care? It’s probably because they really don’t.

Before I spend another couple of grand on the Adobe CS4 Master Collection, I decided to order the 30-day trial version, just to put a 30-day space between me throwing thousands of dollars around. (I’m referring to my recent iMac purchase that I wrote about in the last post in case you didn’t’ read it).

Everything is working great but one thing that I find very annoying is that Dreamweaver CS4 has a problem with copying selections of code. If you go to select a part of the code in Code view it highlights the entire code and copies it instead. Nothing I do seems to help. Some sort of glitch. I thought it was just my computer or something but after Googling it I find that a lot of people are suffering the same issues. As far as I can tell this goes back all the way to March 2009. I just wonder why Adobe has not fixed it yet.

I called Adobe but they don’t want to speak with me about it because I do not have their full version of software. They sent me to fill out a support ticket on their website but on the website they only give you certain things you can submit a support ticket on, based on their record of my purchases in my account. Since I have not purchased the real version, Dreamweaver is not one of the choices available.

Soo, I am thinking, isn’t the trial version there for you  to test the software and then purchase the real thing? So if the trial version does not work – why would someone buy the full version? As a company wouldn’t they want to take care of a potential customer that is one step away from making a purchase?

I am considering buying the CS3 version of the master collection… I know it works, I’ve been using it for a couple of years with no problems.

Man, it’s not like I’m buying a popsicle, this is a 2 thousand dollar purchase, it better work.

If anyone knows about this issue and found a fix, would you please let me know in the comments? Or if you have a similar situation, leave your experiences in the comments too.

Anyways, If you’re interested in becoming a certified specialist in Microsoft MCSE 70-290 or Cisco exam 640-802 then, I’d recommend you to go for practice exams , study guides developed by ExamsExpert.

Till next time,

uh why would u purchase it. do what the rest of the world is doing. download the full version online and if you want to support adobe then pay for the license. every pirated software website promotes supporting the vendors so by downloading its not illegal if your gonna get and try it. if you dont want to download pirated software you can also go to your local college and get it for dirt cheap.

Ok, after submitting a support ticket on Adobe by using the available choices even though they did not apply to my situation, i filled in the comment box explaining my problem.

Their first reply was pretty funny… They said, “So I understand you are having a hard time trying to select your code?” and they continued on to explain how you put your mouse at the beginning of where you want to select and drag the mouse to where you want the selection to end. I couldn’t believe them.

Anyway, after I explained that I do know how to use a computer, on their second try, after telling me that they do not have support available for a trial version (that doesn’t work) and they want me to buy the full version, he did leave me a tip that worked… for a while anyway. Will see if it lasts.

    Here is what I did:

    Re-create the Dreamweaver preferences file.

You can re-create the Dreamweaver preferences file to eliminate problems
caused by a damaged preferences file.

Note: Re-creating the Dreamweaver preferences file restores settings to their defaults.

To re-create the Dreamweaver preferences file:

    Quit Dreamweaver.

Drag the Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Prefs file from the /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences folder to the Trash.

    Restart Dreamweaver.

If the problem recurs after you re-create the Dreamweaver preferences file, then the problem isn’t related to preference files.

I’m glad you blogged about this… I use CS3 I was thinking of getting CS4 but I may just stick with what I have :-)

    I think; always use CS3…

Update… The above trick did not help. Still doing same thing.

I tried running the latest Adobe Update which took 2 hours to download. I thought that would fix it but no, still same thing.

I found a way to deal with it temporarily. When I open a new document, I click anywhere in the code inside the Code Inspector window and that disables the highlighting bug and then I am able to use the file normally in the code view. If I switch to another document tab, the problem returns and have to click in Code Inspector window again to disable the bug.

I am definitely going with CS3. Will upgrade to CS4 or maybe even straight to CS5 when it comes out.

  6. Bug says:

It’s a known bug in CS4. On normal code you can just click in the design window and then back on the code. Bug then is “fixed”. However if you have pure CSS loaded, you can’t “fix” that. Drives you crazy at first, but you get so used to clicking on the design window you forget about it. It doesn’t do it if you open up your CSS from the parent source, because you can click the design. And it doesn’t seem to happen very often if you open the CSS from the source. But if you just open it as a regular file it nails you every time. The fact that Adobe hasn’t fixed it makes me think they don’t use it in-house. Their solution is to switch back to classic view.

I decided to go ahead and purchase CS4 suite and see if the problem will not appear on the retail version or see if Adobe will help me fix it on the purchased version because they will not even attempt to try to help with the trial version. (Stupid move on their part… loosing lots of customers unsatisfied). I would have used another brand by now with all I had to go through with them but they have the monopoly on the design industry (I wonder if anyone realizes that) and there is no other product that is available out there that a professional can use.

  8. Thomas says:

And is the purchased version better?
They have no monopoly, we moved already to GIMP – no license costs, it starts faster and have a big community. At begin it costs a little time to find all things. But there is nothing that we missed. And there is a big community with filters, gradients and plugins.

  9. valiik says:

I purchased the Design Premium Suite and no, it’s not any better… I found a sweet spot in Classic mode where it does not freak out on me and am just using it in that. I must say I am VERY disappointed with the customer service quality at Adobe. It is worthless, no communication between reps and they make promises on follow up and never do. they overcharged my card by $400 and it’s been over 14 days now and still no refund (this is with the refund case being escalated to very important state, I can just imagine how long it takes normally). If Adobe was not a MONOPOLY!!!!!!! I would never use them, I don’t think.

Hello, i have a similiar problem. Are you problem is still having?

  11. valiik says:

Yes the problem is still there but if you select the classic workspace layout (Window > Workspace Layout > Classic) than it seems to work good.

  12. alik says:

Especifically Adobe is wll known a one of those companies that only care about their money and business and they don’t really give a sh about their consumers.

  13. Max says:

    Hey,

Thank you for the post – switching to Classic view seems to have fixed this issue in the short term. Wonder if this will get fixed in a future update?

    Max.

  14. valiik says:

The problem is that Adobe does not even admit there is this issue. I am sorry to say but of all the Adobe software I have on my Mac, Dreamweaver is the worst and the most buggy. They need to focus on it more. I hope maybe CS5 will be better but I’m not holding my breath.

  15. Baggins says:

Adobe, copy/paste is definitely a bug in Dreamweaver! Infuriating.

    Thank you for the workaround:
Window > Workspace Layout > Classic

  16. Natalie says:

This bug has really bothered me for a long time, as I daily work with a CSS file open alongside a design view html page. I thought switching to classic view fixed it, too…but it started reoccuring. I THINK I may have narrowed down where the problem is. This bug seems to pop up when you have an html page open, a css page open, AND the code inspector window open.

I have my code inspector and files panels grouped together in one box, so I can tab between them. As soon as I tabbed to the files panel (thus hiding the code inspector), the all code highlighting seems to have STOPPED, both for when I click to select the CSS window, AND when I copy/paste in it.
