Do You Have The Technology To Be A Real Web Designer?

I mean, do you have the Hardware and Software to do the job right? It’s not just about Photoshop and Dreamweaver anymore, these days you need to have a fleet of computers with various operating systems and browser versions installed to make sure the website you just got done designing and programming does not win the #1 spot on the WebsitesThatSuck.com website.

With the new version 8 of the Internet Explorer out, now we have three IE-if-statements to include in head section of the pages. One more to worry about. That’s in addition to the two or more FireFox versions, Chrome, Opera, Safari and others. Seriously, if you are not a fairly large company, you might not even be able to afford so many computers to run these various versions of browsers and then different variations of OS/Browser combinations because they do behave differently, on Windows XP and Windows Vista for instance, IE 7 will sometimes need a kick in the pants.

Of course you have the choice to have the hard drive partitioned with various installations on the same computer but it is still more hassle that it should really be. Only if the companies would adhere to the standards, we would be happy campers and then everyone would become web designers and we’d have a different problem then.

That’s my rant for today. Please feel free to express your frustration in the comments. This will be the webdesigners’ therapy page. ;)

Hey Valiik, I share your frustration my friend. I have a theory about Microsoft’s take on the web. I blogged about it a while back and I thought you may be interested: http://joreteg.com/post/114081856/is-microsoft-purposely-holding-back-the-web

Another approach is to go the route of facebook and youTube and start phasing out IE6 support. (http://ajaxian.com/archives/the-slow-death-of-ie-6-support-youtube-and-browser-placement)

IE7 is a bit more manageable (although still a pain) and IE8 usually looks decent enough if it your site works in FF.

It’s possible to accomplish all the tasks using only one old PC, one OS, and only free software, trust me it is, I am the proof :)

I have 5 years old PC with linux installed, use inkscape for my graphics, quanta plus as my editor, IE4linux to test my web pages have 3 different versions of firefox installed, opera installed and chromium browser.

So, it is possible but can give you headache sometimes.
All browsers that are not w3c standard should be permitted and they should be redirected from all sites to firefox download page ;)

IE has been a pain for me ever since I started web design. I feel your frustration too. Not too long ago I wrote a post about how much IE sucks along with the major problems I encountered http://www.michael-li.com/ie-totally-blows/2009/04/24/.

I was able to get by testing my design in different versions of IE through this program called IE Tester. It didn’t work perfectly but it was able to get the job done. Through careful planning we were able to get our site to work well in the popular browsers.

On one of my company’s sites we detect their browser and recommend that they upgrade to IE 8 if they’re running older version.

Anyways the future of web design looks brighter and better. I can’t wait till IE7 and lower are completely phased out.
