What About IE8? Should You Worry About It?

Lots of different rumors are going around about Internet Explorer 8, some are good some are bad, but non the less we as web designers have another browser compliance to worry about. I wrote about IE8 a while ago in my IE8 Already? I Just Got Used To IE7! post. I have switched over to FireFox since then and am liking it better, it has it’s own issues but nothing compared to what I had to deal with in IE7.
Jillian Koeneman of EffectWebMedia.com says to Skip IE8, her article called Skip IE8, You Aren’t Missing Anything suggests to just completely ignore IE8 because more and more consumers are turning away from IE to other browsers of choice. You might think that with the new IE8 release, the browser has improved but in Jillian’s words, upgrading from IE7 to IE8 is “similar to upgrading from McDonalds to Burger King. It’s an improvement but it still sucks and is bad for you.”

In fact, according to Net Applications Browser Market Share Report, IE’s market share is down 7% from July 08 and FireFox is up 3.5% and IE has lost over 25% since 2004 (see above).
Sooo, maybe IE will just go away?…right! Or maybe they will get the point, it’s time to fix the browser and time to adhere to the standards.

My dream is that they release IE9, based on WebKit or Gecko. I think it will remain a dream though.
Alternatively, anyone who has the right brains – how about an ActiveX (or whatever) plugin for IE, that implements WebKit/Gecko? That way, all we’d have to do is include the plugin for IE users, and then they’re suddenly compatible – woo!
