Left Side Header From A Japanese Site
A great example of a unique design that works well in Japanese but can be implimented for any language site. The sidebar in this case that acts as the header. It takes up about half the page and uses a great, crisp photo to bring focus to the theme of the site. Makes me hungry already.
Think outside the box.
