Rules For Creating Logos

This morning I found this list of 45 Rules for creating Logos that i think has some useful tips.

Here is a few of the ones I thought were the top 10.

  1. Stick to 3 or less colors.
  2. Use only the elements that are absolutely necessary.
  3. Use easy to read fonts.
  4. Make the logo looks appealing to average person (and so it doesn’t offend anyone).
  5. The logo should have and look good in a black and white version.
  6. The logo should look good when inverted for dark (or light) background.
  7. The logo should be a Vector so it can be easily resized while keeping clean lines and edges.
  8. Realize that you will not create a perfect logo.
  9. Sketch out ideas using paper and pencil before working on a computer.
  10. Keep the design simple. (KISS)

Some other ideas I’d like ot add to these:

  1. Use the following to illustrate separation of separate words in logos that contain more than one word: white space, font size, icons (like bullet, pipe, arrows, etc), colors & fonts.
  2. Sketch all the ideas that come to mind when starting work on a logo, no matter how crazy, dorky or ugly.
  3. Research the company that the logo is for to understand how to better represent it.
  4. Research the customers that will be looking at this logo to understand how to better appeal to them.
  5. Keep in mind that the logo might be used on stationary, business cards, banners, signs, bill boards, websites, shirts and other media.

Does anyone have any to add? We love our readers’ input!
