As a web designer, many times I have found my self in a situation where the client wanted me to put their video on the website I am building for them. “The video is on our current site, just use it”, they say. Well, after looking at the embed codeĀ I find out that the video is hosted on youtube or on some other server somewhere. And they don;t have the original file.
There are a couple solutions to this problem that I found. One is KeepVid.com, you just enter the URL of the video into the program and it captures the video for you. KeepVid can also convert the video into a MP4 file that will run on most video players.
The other solution is a video-capture button on the DownloadHelper toolbar add-on for FireFox browser that you can download by going into the Tools menu in FireFox.
Miro is the third one that I found helpful for this problem and it is also free, you can download it at getMiro.com.
If you find yourself needing to capture streaming video, the above will not work, you will need something like SnagIt that is available from techsmith.com for $50. SnagIt is for Windows operating systems, for Mac there is Snapz Pro, this one sells for $70 at ambrosiasw.com

Hi,
I see you don’t mention Camtasia Studio. It’s what I believe the most used tool.
That is a good point. I do myself use it, I don’t know why I didn’t this of it. Thank you Peter.
